Fuse Observations of Nebular O Vi Emission from Ngc 6543 ∗

چکیده
NGC6543 is one of the few planetary nebulae (PNe) whose X-ray emission has been shown to be extended and originate from hot interior gas. Using FUSE observations we have now detected nebular O VI emission from NGC6543. Its central star, with an effective temperature of ∼50,000 K, is too cool to photoionize O V, so the O VI ions must have been produced by thermal collisions at the interface between the hot interior gas and the cool nebular shell. We modeled the O VI emission incorporating thermal conduction, but find that simplistic assumptions for the AGB and fast wind mass loss rates overproduce X-ray emission and O VI emission. We have therefore adopted the pressure of the interior hot gas for the interface layer and find that expected O VI emission to be comparable to the observations. Comment on “Chandra Reveals X-ray Glint in the Cat’s Eye”
Chu et al. (2001) report that they find the diffuse X-ray emission from the Cat’s Eye Nebula, NGC 6543, to be inconsistent with nebular abundances but consistent with abundances expected for the stellar wind although the location and the derived temperature for the X-ray emitting region of NGC 6543 require that a significant fraction of the X-ray emitting material be nebular. A recent determina...

An early analysis of Chandra observations of the planetary nebula NGC 6543 suggested that the location and the derived temperature for the X-ray emitting region is inconsistent with the abundances measured for this object (Chu et al. 2001). We revisit Chandra observations of this source (following significant updates to both the reprocessing and extraction software) in order to propose a resolu...

Cooling flow models for the hot gas in elliptical galaxies predict that gas is cooling at a rate of ∼ 1 M⊙ yr , yet there is little evidence for this phenomenon beyond the X-ray waveband. If hot gas is cooling, it will pass through the 3× 10 K regime and radiate in the O VI λλ1032,1038 ultraviolet lines, which can be detected with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE ) and here we r...
متن کاملIrac Observations of Planetary Nebulae
We present the initial results from the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) imaging survey of planetary nebulae (PN). The IRAC colors of PN are red, especially when considering the 8.0 μm band. Emission in this band is likely due to contributions from two strong H2 lines and a [Ar III] line in that bandpass. IRAC is sensitive to the emission in the halos as well as in the ionized regions that are opti...
متن کاملSpatially Resolved Far - Ultraviolet Spectroscopy of the Nuclear Region of NGC 1068 1
We carry out high-resolution FUSE spectroscopy of the nuclear region of NGC 1068. The first set of spectra was obtained with a 30 square aperture that collects all emission from the narrow-line region. The data reveal a strong broad O VI component of FWHM ∼ 3500 kms and two narrow O VI λλ1031/1037 components of ∼ 350 kms. The C III λ977 and N III λ991 emission lines in this spectrum can be fitt...
